Take Action: Stop the cuts to Rail and Transit
The Administration has proposed reducing rail and transit funding by nearly $140 million over the next six years by suspending the gas tax and capping the gas tax indexing. These cuts are in addition to the $118 million reduction in funding from the elimination of the grocery sales tax currently before the General Assembly.
While Virginians are estimated to save $0.30 or less a day, oil companies will generate millions in additional profits at the expense of our transportation trust fund.
The cuts to passenger rail will negatively impact the expansion and improvement of new train service between Washington to Richmond, Hampton Roads, Roanoke, and the New River Valley; and limit the Commonwealth's ability to secure federal rail grants because of a reduction in state matching funds.
The cuts will significantly impact transit operating funding which cannot be made up with federal capital grants. Virginia’s transit agencies rely on operating funds for local bus routes, transit worker pay, fuel, maintenance, and many other necessities that are escalating in costs.
Message that will be sent to your legislators:
Dear Senator/Delegate (Name):
I am writing to ask you to oppose the cuts to the Commonwealth's passenger rail and public transportation funds as part of the gas tax suspension and capping of the gas tax index proposals.
These proposals will reduce rail and transit funding by nearly $140 million over the next six years and they are in addition to the $118 million reduction in funding from the elimination of the grocery sales tax currently before the General Assembly.
These cuts to passenger rail funding will negatively impact the expansion and improvement of new train service between Washington to Richmond, Hampton Roads, Roanoke, and the New River Valley; and limit the Commonwealth's ability to secure federal rail grants because of a reduction in state matching funds.
The cuts will significantly impact transit operating funding which cannot be made up with federal capital grants. Virginia’s transit agencies rely on operating funds for local bus routes, transit worker pay, fuel, maintenance, and many other necessities that are escalating in costs. It will also make our transit systems less competitive in securing federal transit grants.
I hope you will oppose these cuts to Virginia’s rail and public transit funding.
